Arguably getting the Quality of Teaching & Learning right in every classroom is the biggest leadership necessity. Leading and learning have been twin fascinations throughout my career. I’ve now moved from having a direct impact on students in the classroom to influencing the learners in the staff room. Working with teachers is a great privilege.
The #DIYTeachingCPD series was my attempt to combine a number of different sets of blogs into a coherent whole. The resources form the basis of a cross phase professional development programme to help teachers take the next step in their professional journey. The resources share my thinking on improving the quality of teaching and learning using lesson planning, lesson study and a range of metrics including watching lessons.

This sets the scene and introduces the reader to two key schemas on which the programme is based. These are schemas about the quality of teaching and learning and planning learning as the prerequisite for effective lesson planning.
The third schema about how students learn is introduced. These three schemas are some of the critical concepts that teachers need to develop the mental model (think software in the brain) to help them process class room learning before, during and after it happens. This session is about ensuring we teach the best that has been thought and said and done. Teach from the big ideas.
This is the assessment one. It focuses on developing specific, extensive and challenging success criteria which define excellence. It then suggests that by determining students’ starting points, challenging end points and keeping the learning visible we can build an outstanding programme of learning for students.
The Goldilocks’ Principle of Learning requires us to create learning gaps that are just right. Structuring the learning from facts to ideas to concepts requires teachers to have an important grasp of how knowledge – factual, conceptual, procedural & metacognitive – is learnt.
DIY Teaching CPD: Pedagogy & Practice (to be added)
Whilst knowledge should be determinedly centrally by teachers and held in common, pedagogy is personal. Each teacher should seek to develop, refine and hone a set of highly effective classroom practices. There are different ways to teach effectively and this is where we can unleash our informed creativity. The focus should be on the quality of methodology rather than promoting a particular approach. Develop class room routines which can be honed as a teacher and which students can be drilled in.
