The world of lesson observation is changing and changing for the better.  The last six month has seen a move to judging the quality of teaching rather than grading individual lessons and Ofsted trialling no grading within lessons.  This must only be a start.  The next big challenge – the one that could radically transform the quality of teaching – is a focus on #FormativeLessonObs. It may be that 2014 will be seen as a pivotal year in changing how we judge the quality of teaching.  The move from grading individual lessons to viewing teaching, students’ work and progress over time and in a more sophisticated way has only just begun.  If we are serious about having a World Class Education System then the quality of teaching and teacher quality matters more than ever.  Continue reading

Growth Mindset: The Latest Silver Bullet?

I don’t want to be a “party pooper” and I am also rather concerned that I could be turning into a grumpy old man.  I’m just about the right age.  This post may even just be revealing my Fixed Mindset but I’m concerned we may be getting a bit too carried away with Growth Mindset.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved reading the book back in October 2012 on a short break in Madrid and I think it has much to commend it.
