Statistically, working in a school with a large number of disadvantaged pupils of white ethnic origin isn’t likely to lead to many accolades or much acknowledgement. Blackpool is one such town; fortunately there is no all boys’ school; the hardest of the hard school improvement miles is raising attainment and showing good progress for white disadvantaged boys.
Schools don’t usually group all disadvantaged pupils together and deliberately teach them badly. A lack of progress by this sub-group maybe a result of more generic issues across the school; disadvantaged children are just impacted on more. Continue reading
Some schools take the kitchen sink approach; throw everything at it. Others are so underfunded that Pupil Premium funding is essentially used to ensure they can deliver a core education. Many schools have latched on to the Education Endowment Foundation Teaching & Learning Toolkit. Collectively, however, we are failing to have an impact. The statistics are clear and stark.
